Abstract

The concepts of mahr and bride price hold significant socio-religious importance within Semitic religions, including Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. While often conflated with dowry, these practices differ in purpose, function, and cultural interpretations. This paper explores the distinctions and overlaps between mahr, dowry, and bride price, analyzing their theological foundations, historical evolution, and socio-legal implications. It examines scriptural references and religious traditions to understand how these financial transactions impact gender roles, marriage dynamics, and women's economic rights. Through comparative analysis, the study highlights the ways in which these practices have been interpreted and adapted over time, shedding light on their relevance in contemporary debates on marriage, gender equity, and legal frameworks within Semitic traditions.
