Abstract

PCOS is frequently accompanied by metabolic and endocrine derangements espcecially during reproductive age of women. PCOS has been associated with thyroid dysfunction; however, the exact relationship remains elusive. The thyroid hormone profile (TSH, T3, and T4) is measured in this study in both PCOS and non-PCOS patients. To find out the relation between thyroid hormone levels in PCOS patients and those in healthy individuals by comparing TSH, T3, and T4 levels. One hundred female participants in two groups—one with PCOS and the other without—were the subjects of a case-control observational study. Thyroid profile (TSH, T3, and T4) were measured in blood samples, and an statistical test (independent t test) was used for statistical analysis. The research demonstrated that PCOS patients had elevated TSH levels (p = 0.0047) together with reduced T4 levels (p < 0.0001). Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference in T3 levels with a p-value of 0.065. The analysis demonstrated moderate positive relation between PCOS and TSH (r = 0.256) alongside moderate negative relation between PCOS and T4 (r = -0.408) establishing a connection between thyroid dysfunction and PCOS.The data shows possible connections between PCOS and thyroid malfunctions which include higher TSH alongside lower T4 levels. Performing regular thyroid screenings for PCOS patients can help with early detection and treatment of related conditions. A larger sample size is needed for future studies to verify these results and investigate the underlying mechanisms.
